National Angel Food Cake Day

The story

The sweet journey of angel food cake began in 1878 when the first documented recipe appeared in Isabella Stewart's cookbook, "The Home Messenger Book of Tested Recipes." While its origins remain debated, it gained popularity after the introduction of the rotary egg beater in 1865, simplifying the labor-intensive process of whipping egg whites. Named for its angelic resemblance, the cake evolved and officially became "angel food cake" in 1886.

This sponge cake stands out by using only egg whites, with cream of tartar stabilizing the whipped whites for a distinct airy texture. Baked in a tube pan, the cake's center hole aids its rise, creating a unique visual and textural experience. Toppings range from simple glazes to sweet sauces, offering a versatile palate of flavors.

Celebrated widely, National Angel Food Cake Day encourages baking this heavenly treat. The process involves whipping egg whites, adding flour, sugar, and cream of tartar, and baking in an ungreased tube pan. The cake can be topped with various fruits, sauces, or whipped cream.

While associated with the U.S., angel food cake has international variations like "castella cake" in Japan and "Victoria sponge" in the UK, showcasing its adaptability.

Whether enjoyed traditionally or with creative twists, angel food cake remains a beloved dessert, celebrated on this day by savoring every airy bite.
