National Chicken Wing Day

The story

Buffalo wings, a quintessential American classic, feature deep-fried, unbreaded chicken wings coated in a tantalizing blend of cayenne pepper hot sauce, vinegar, and butter. Served with celery, carrot sticks, and blue cheese or ranch dressing, these wings are a beloved appetizer and bar food. The dish's origins, often attributed to Teresa Bellissimo at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo in 1964, have a bit of mystery, with other contenders like John Young introducing a breaded version in 1961.

Regardless of the true inventor, Buffalo wings quickly gained popularity, turning into a sensation and inspiring variations on other fried foods. The 1970s and 1980s saw Buffalo wings becoming a staple in the United States and Canada, leading to the emergence of popular chicken wing franchises. The city of Buffalo declared July 29th as Chicken Wing Day in 1977.

National Chicken Wing Day is celebrated annually, with restaurants offering discounts and promotions. The love for Buffalo wings extends to the National Buffalo Wing Festival in Orchard Park, New York, since 2003. The dish's evolution reflects its journey from humble origins to global stardom, now an essential part of gatherings worldwide, enjoyed for its versatility, affordability, and diverse flavors.
