The story

Around 3000 BC, the early roots of desserts began, with ice cream tracing back to ancient China. Initially, it was flavored ice, but it became a sensation in Italy thanks to Catherine de Medici. The word ”dessert“ originates from the French term ”desservir,“ meaning ”to clear the table,“ referring to a sweet course served after clearing dishes in the 15th century. National Dessert Day celebrates the diverse world of desserts found in every national cuisine, evolving from ancient times when desserts were simple, consisting of fruit, nuts, and honey. The introduction of sugar and culinary advancements over the centuries led to the creation of a variety of delightful desserts. In the 19th century, iconic American desserts emerged, such as the Boston Creme Pie and Key Lime Pie. Other notable desserts like Baked Alaska, Banana Split, Ice Cream Cone, and Cheesecake enriched the dessert landscape. Vanilla, sourced from Mexico, and filo dough, dating back to the early 1300s, have interesting histories. Even seemingly modern desserts like rhubarb and marshmallows had different origins, with rhubarb grown for medicine and marshmallows unheard of until the mid-1800s. Licorice, once used for flavoring, is now made with synthetic materials, and chocolate, brought to Europe from Mexico and Central America, initially used in a spicy drink, became the sweet treat we love with the addition of sugar and milk. Pies, puddings, and custards, with savory beginnings, transformed over time, leading to the creation of delightful desserts like lemon meringue pie in the 19th century.
