The story
In 1917, Archibald Query of Somerville, Massachusetts, created Marshmallow Creme, laying the foundation for the Fluffernutter sandwich. During World War I, Emma and Amory Curtis of Melrose, Massachusetts, published a recipe for a peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwich, possibly the earliest version of the Fluffernutter.
In 1920, Query sold his Marshmallow Creme recipe to Durkee-Mower, Inc., renaming it Marshmallow Fluff. The term "Fluffernutter" was coined in the 1960s for effective marketing.
Creating a Fluffernutter is simple: spread marshmallow creme on one slice of bread and peanut butter on another, then combine. Additional ingredients like bananas or bacon can add adventurous twists.
"Fluffernutter" extends beyond sandwiches to various treats like cupcakes, cookies, bars, candy, and French toast. National Fluffernutter Day is celebrated on October 8th, recalling childhood favorites and marking milestones in the sandwich's rich history.
The Fluffernutter's journey includes the 1920 sale of the original Fluff recipe, the 1960s trademarking of “Fluffernutter”, and the 2006 introduction of it as a Brigham's Ice Cream flavor. Even in space, Commander Sunita Williams of NASA declared it her favorite treat aboard the International Space Station in 2012.
The sandwich's origins intertwine with entrepreneurial spirits like Emma Curtis and Archibald Query. In 2006, a Massachusetts state assembly debate considered naming the Fluffernutter the official state sandwich. This iconic treat continues to be beloved in school cafeterias, college dorms, and diners across the nation.
