The story
National Nachos Day, celebrated in homage to the beloved snack, has its roots in the Mexican town of Piedras Negras in 1943. Ignacio ”Nacho“ Anaya, maître d' at El Moderno Restaurant, improvised the original nachos for U.S. Army wives using cut tortillas, shredded cheese, and jalapeños, creating the ”Nacho's Special.“ The dish gained popularity in Texas and the Southwest, evolving from ”Nacho's Special“ to simply ”nachos.“ Anaya's recipe found a place in the 1954 St. Anne’s Cookbook, and his legacy continued through Nacho's Restaurant in Piedras Negras. In the 1970s and 1980s, stadium nachos, introduced by Frank Liberto at Arlington Stadium, and a mention on Monday Night Football by Howard Cosell, catapulted nachos into American tradition. National Nacho Day celebrates not only the accidental creation of this iconic snack but also its evolution. From basic tortilla chips and cheese, nachos have become a culinary canvas, featuring diverse toppings like salsa, guacamole, sour cream, beef, chicken, seafood, beans, and chili con carne. Nachos transcend cultural boundaries, appearing in various cuisines with unique twists, such as Italian nachos with mozzarella and Alfredo sauce or Asian nachos with wasabi or curry. Nachos' history honors Ignacio Anaya's service-minded approach, inviting everyone to appreciate the rich history and creative variations that make nachos a global favorite.
