Johnson declared bourbon ”The Official Spirit of America,“ solidifying its place despite challenges during Prohibition and World War II. For a whiskey to be bourbon, it must be U.S.-made, with a mash of at least 51% corn, aged for two years in new charred oak barrels. Kentucky's limestone spring water and charred barrels contribute to bourbon's unique flavor. National Bourbon Day on June 14th commemorates its symbolic birthday, highlighting its journey from humble beginnings to global acclaim. Facing lows in the '70s and '80s, bourbon's resurgence saw the American whiskey industry selling 15.4 million cases in 2010, generating $1.9 billion.
