The story

Cookies, originally dubbed “little cakes,” have a storied history dating back to Persia in the 7th century, where they served as test cakes for oven temperatures. The term “cookie” finds its roots in the Dutch word “koekje,” meaning “little cake,” and Dutch colonists brought these treats to America in the 17th century, transforming them into the present-day American cookie. What distinguishes cookies from traditional cakes and pastries is their unique composition. Cookie dough typically lacks water, relying on a higher content of oil or butter, resulting in a denser structure and a beloved texture. Throughout history, cookies adapted to the tastes of different cultures, with playful names like jumbles and tea cakes. The 19th century saw transformative changes in cookie history, fueled by transportation advancements. Trains provided access to new ingredients like coconut and oranges, expanding flavor options. The 20th century brought electricity, extending cookie shelf life and introducing innovative ingredients. A pivotal moment occurred in 1937 when Ruth Graves Wakefield invented the iconic chocolate chip cookie at the Toll House Restaurant. The agreement with Nestle to print the recipe on its chocolate bar packaging elevated the chocolate chip cookie to legendary status. In the 21st century, Maxine's Heavenly emerged as a modern homage to wholesome and delicious cookies, reimagining traditional recipes with healthier alternatives. National Cookie Day, founded in 1987 by Matt Nader of Blue Chip Cookies, celebrates this iconic treat's diversity, with noteworthy types including chocolate chip, butter, oatmeal raisin, and peanut butter cookies.
