The story

They'd stuff slices of meats, cheese, and lettuce into soft baguette-shaped rolls and take them to work. The legend goes that this easy-to-make yet delicious creation earned the moniker 'the Hog Island' sandwich. However, it underwent a linguistic makeover as 'hoggie' before eventually evolving into the affectionate 'hoagie' we know and love today. But that's not the only story. Another tale transports us back to the early 20th century when street food vendors, known as 'hokey-pokey men,' were concocting mouthwatering magic. These vendors would slice long loaves in half and stuff them with antipasto salad, offering a filling snack that might have even had them dancing the ”hokey-pokey“ while they prepared it. While the origins remain subject to debate, what's clear is that all these tales converge in the vibrant foodie haven of Philadelphia in the early 20th century. The city's cultural melting pot was the perfect backdrop for the hoagie's evolution, leading to its place in the heart of Philadelphians. Speaking of Philadelphia's affection for the hoagie, it's worth noting that in 1992, the city's mayor, Ed Rendell, declared the hoagie as the official sandwich of the city.
