National Pecan Cookie Day

The story

National Queso Day, celebrated annually on September 20th, honors the rich history of a dish that originated in the Mexican state of Chihuahua and later became a staple in Tex-Mex and Southwestern cuisine. The journey of queso began with the Aztecs, who crafted an early version of ”chihuahua cheese.“ Spanish conquistadors introduced new cheese-making techniques, leading to the birth of melted cheese dishes that would later evolve into queso.

The exact origins of queso are debated, with some crediting Otis Farnsworth in 1900 and others pointing to Martinez Café in 1918 for its introduction to Tex-Mex. Regardless, National Queso Day invites enthusiasts to savor the simple pleasures of Chile con Queso—a delectable blend of cheeses, cream, and jalapeño peppers, often enjoyed with tortilla chips or tortillas. The social and sharing aspect of queso, often served in communal bowls, has made it a popular choice for gatherings.

Tex-Mex restaurants have elevated queso by offering variations with black beans, ground pork or beef, guacamole, and pico de gallo. While its exact roots may be debated, queso's undeniable deliciousness has solidified its place in American cuisine, with Velveeta's invention in 1918 and features in cookbooks. From Tex-Mex eateries to fast-food chains like Chipotle and Wendy's, the love for queso continues to grow, making it a beloved and versatile dish enjoyed across the United States.
