The story

Contrary to its Italian-sounding name, pepperoni pizza is a truly American invention, born in the bustling streets of New York City in the early 20th century. Italian immigrants, inspired by the flavors of their homeland, crafted this spicy salami known as pepperoni. The name itself, derived from the Italian word ”pepperoni“ meaning bell peppers, aptly captures the essence of this pizza topping flavored with paprika. Pepperoni, a cured dry sausage made from a blend of pork and beef, became a star pizza topping through the ingenuity of Italian Americans. The pizza evolution took an exciting turn when, in 1950, a pizzeria in New Haven, Connecticut showcased pepperoni on its menu, marking the earliest evidence of this delectable combination. Today, sliced pepperoni reigns as the most beloved pizza topping in the United States, with a staggering 36% of Americans choosing to adorn their pizzas with its flavorful presence. In the pizza parlors of yesteryear, pepperoni was crafted with a natural casing, leading to charmingly curled slices that cradled flavorful grease. As commercial suppliers entered the scene, a transition to an artificial casing occurred, putting an end to the distinctive curl. Yet, in pockets of the Midwest, particularly around Buffalo, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio, the traditional ”cup and char“ style still prevails, delivering a more expensive but undeniably authentic pepperoni pizza experience.
