The story

Tortellini’s story begins in the Emilia-Romagna region in medieval Italy, though its exact birthplace is debated. Some say it’s from Bologna, others insist on Modena.

According to legend, a tavern keeper in Bologna caught a glimpse of the goddess Venus through a keyhole. The sight of her navel inspired him to create tortellini, shaping it to resemble her belly button. Another tale links tortellini to Lucrezia Borgia, with her beauty sparking the same creative idea.

The first written recipe for tortellini dates back to the 14th century. It was originally made to use up leftover meats and cheese, transforming them into something extraordinary.

Traditionally, tortellini is made with egg pasta rolled into thin sheets and stuffed with a mixture of pork, prosciutto, mortadella, Parmesan, nutmeg, and breadcrumbs. Each piece is carefully folded and sealed into its signature shape. While making tortellini by hand requires years of skill, modern conveniences mean you can easily find excellent pre-made options to enjoy at home.

In Emilia-Romagna, tortellini is often served in broth (Tortellini in Brodo), making it a popular dish for Christmas and special occasions. It’s also delicious with rich sauces like Alfredo, pesto, or a simple butter and sage combination. No matter how it’s served, tortellini always feels like a special treat.

Tortellini’s cultural significance goes beyond the dinner table. In Bologna, the Learned Order of the Tortellini is a group dedicated to preserving its traditions. Members wear tortellini-shaped hats and gold medallions as they celebrate this beloved dish and its history.
