Luqaimat Day

The story

Luqaimat are small, golden fried dumplings that appear on nearly every festive table in Saudi Arabia, from Ramadan iftar spreads to National Day celebrations. Balls of soft yeast dough are dropped into hot oil until puffed and crisp outside, then showered with date syrup, honey, or sugar syrup and often sprinkled with sesame seeds. Their name means "small bites," and that is exactly what they are: irresistible morsels meant to be eaten warm, one after another, with sticky fingers and happy sighs.

The dish belongs to a wider Gulf tradition, but Saudis have made luqaimat their own, serving them beside Arabic coffee at gatherings and setting out platters for neighbors during Eid. Street vendors fry them fresh at evening markets, and home cooks compete gently over whose version is lightest and most evenly golden. Luqaimat embody the Saudi love of sharing sweet things in abundance—no celebration feels complete without a towering pile on the dessert table.
