The story

The history of chocolate milk traces back to the Olmec people in ancient Mesoamerica around 1900 B.C., who initially used chocolate for medical and religious purposes. By 1494, native Jamaicans were crafting a hot chocolate beverage by boiling cacao shavings with milk and cinnamon, predating the credited inventor, Sir Hans Sloane. Sir Hans Sloane, an Irish botanist and physician, is often attributed to the invention of chocolate milk during his time in Jamaica in the late 17th century. After encountering a local cocoa and water beverage, Sloane enhanced it by adding milk for a more palatable taste. While his concoction was initially sold as a medicinal elixir in the 1750s, marketed as ”Sir Hans Sloane’s Milk Chocolate,“ historical records suggest that Jamaicans were already preparing a similar drink in 1494, sparking debates over Sloane's exclusive credit. Chocolate milk's popularity surged in the 19th and 20th centuries with commercial developments like Cadbury’s drinking chocolate and Nestle's Nesquik chocolate milk powder. The Van Houten company's invention of cocoa pressing in 1828 further improved chocolate milk's consistency. National Chocolate Milk Day celebrates this classic treat, offering various forms, from ready-to-drink options to cocoa powder mixes. However, it's essential to note that commercial chocolate milk often contains high sugar levels, emphasizing the importance of moderation.
