National Egg Day
Wednesday, June 3, 2026 · June 3 every year
The story
World Egg Day, established in 1996 by the International Egg Commission (IEC), celebrates the nutritional excellence of eggs. Originally held in Vienna, this annual event has evolved over the years, encouraging creative ways to honor these nutrient-packed wonders. Eggs have undergone a perception shift, once feared for cholesterol content, but now deemed dietary darlings. In 2000, the American Heart Association revised guidelines, permitting daily egg consumption without cholesterol concerns. Archaeological evidence traces eggs back to the Neolithic Age, with records of fowl-laid eggs in 1400 B.C. in Egypt and China. Chicken farmers in 300 B.C. began incubating eggs in clay ovens, transitioning from backyard egg farming in the 1920s. Beyond their deliciousness, eggs offer a complete protein package, containing all essential amino acids. Contrary to cholesterol fears, studies suggest eggs may boost ”good“ cholesterol. Rich in antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, eggs promote eye health, and egg yolks provide rare Vitamin D. In the 1960s, cholesterol concerns led to caution regarding egg consumption, but by 2015, restrictions eased. National Egg Day encourages embracing the whole egg, emphasizing its nutrition and affordability.
