National Macaroni Day

The story
National Macaroni Day pays homage to one of the most cherished pasta varieties in the world. Macaroni, originating from the Italian word 'maccheroni,' refers to a small, tube-shaped pasta that has its roots in Naples, Italy. What makes this pasta so intriguing is its versatility, available in both straight and curved forms, with the curved variety often referred to as elbow macaroni. The English language has come to associate the term “macaroni” predominantly with the curved variety, as it is frequently used in the beloved dish of macaroni and cheese. Interestingly, in many languages, “macaroni” has evolved into a generic term encompassing all pasta types. One of the most iconic macaroni dishes, particularly in the United States, is macaroni and cheese, often referred to simply as “mac and cheese.” This comfort food staple made its way to American tables in the late 18th century, thanks to Thomas Jefferson, who was the American Ambassador to France. During his stay in Paris, James Hemmings, a slave Jefferson had brought along, studied the art of cooking and encountered a pasta and cheese dish. Upon returning to the United States, Hemmings adapted it, giving rise to the “macaroni pie,” a precursor to the mac and cheese we adore today. Traditional mac and cheese is a delectable oven-baked casserole with a sauce made from Cheddar cheese, milk, and butter. While Cheddar is the classic choice, other sharp-flavored cheeses like Gouda or Gruyere can be used.
