The story

Pancakes, simple flat cakes made from batter, hold a significant place in human history, dating back over 30,000 years when Stone Age people created them from cattails and ferns. In ancient Greece and Rome, they were crafted from wheat flour, olive oil, honey, and curdled milk, celebrated by poets like Cratinus and Magnes, and even mentioned by Shakespeare during the English Renaissance. The term ”pancake“ emerged in the medieval era, with these delicacies often associated with the working class, made from affordable ingredients like barley and buckwheat. A bread shortage in 1870 led Parisians to turn to rice crepes. Pancakes were enjoyed by various classes, including English nobility like Anne Clifford, and they became associated with different occupations, from miners to Victorian-era citizens occasionally indulging in caviar pancakes. In many cultures, Shrove Tuesday became a day for indulging in sugary, buttery pancakes before Lent, as dairy and meat were restricted. Globally, pancakes take on unique styles, from American stacks with maple syrup to French crepes, Ethiopian injera, Korean buchimgae, Chinese jianbing, North Indian cheela, Venezuelan cachapas, South Indian dosa, Dutch babies, and Moroccan msemen. The 20th century introduced IHOP's National Pancake Day in March, offering free stacks for charity, and in 2005, September 26 became a celebrated pancake day, adding a modern twist to the enduring legacy of this beloved culinary delight.
