The story

Chocolate’s story begins with the Olmecs, one of Mesoamerica’s earliest civilizations. By 1500 B.C., they had unlocked the magic of cacao, using it to brew ceremonial drinks. Archeologists have found traces of theobromine—a stimulant in cacao—in ancient pots, but whether the Olmecs used the beans or just the pulp remains a mystery.

The Maya took cacao further, making it a staple of daily life. Thick, frothy chocolate, often spiced with chili or honey, was enjoyed at every meal. The Aztecs, on the other hand, saw cacao as divine and named their chocolate drink xocolatl.

Cacao beans were even used as currency, valued more than gold. Montezuma II, the famed Aztec ruler, reportedly drank gallons of xocolatl daily, for energy and, according to legend, as an aphrodisiac.

Chocolate’s journey to Europe is wrapped in myth. Did Columbus intercept a cacao-laden ship, or did Hernán Cortés learn its secrets from Montezuma’s court? Either way, chocolate landed in Spain, where it was sweetened with cinnamon and sugar, becoming a favorite of the elite.

By the 1800s, chocolate transformed. Dutch chemist Coenraad van Houten invented the cocoa press, making powdered chocolate accessible. In 1847, J.S. Fry and Sons created the first chocolate bar, and by 1876, Daniel Peter and Henri Nestlé had perfected milk chocolate.

Today, chocolate spans mass-produced treats to artisanal creations. While milk chocolate remains a favorite, dark chocolate, with at least 70% cocoa, has earned its reputation as a bittersweet, antioxidant-rich delight.
